I have a 4400 john deere.I used it only twice all winter ( lack of snow) When I put the rear end in c range(i call it road gear) I couldn't get in that range after a couple of thyes it went in.It's still hard to get in that range but can still get it their.I was wondering if any of you had the same problem? Thanks for any infor.

Sometimes the gears on my 4300 HST don't seem to mesh when moving the lever into the high range, but touching lightly on the forward or reverse pedals while holding firmly on the shift lever will let it slip right into gear. If this doesn't work for me, then I would see my dealer for some adjustment or problem solving. ....

Yes, with my gear tractor, I say I have to 'tickle the clutch' sometimes to change ranges without grinding. Typically range sections on tractor transmissions are sliding rather than synchromesh gears. The gears can stop on their shafts so the gear teeth aren't aligned. The only way to get them to mesh is to rotate the input shaft slightly. Either a little speed pedal or a little clutch does the same thing. ....

I have a similar problem with my 4300 HST. I think that part of it is hitting the back of the shroud that is around the range shifter. I have noticed that the latest models have more clearance or a shorter throw as they engage the C range before reaching the back of the channel. I do not think there is much in the way of adjustment that I can see as the handle goes directly into the rear end. If there is an adjustment, please let me know.

I have a 4400 HST. Had the same problem. Complained until the factory told the dealer to fix it. Problem is rust where the range shaft enters the rear end. They saved some $ by not putting a grease fitting here that would eliminate the problem. Dealer pulled the shaft out, cleaned the rust and lubed and replaced. Went from almost impossible to change range to quite easy. Still not the best set up. Will have to give it a squirt of oil up there from the bottom from time to time to make it last.
